Moersleutel hopster NEIPA 7%

A new dime in our Barcode series! This beer is an imperial stout that has been aging a total of 1 Year on cognac, apple brandy and scotch barrels. Together creating a lovely blend. After aging we've added natural vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks to this beer. As a result you get a layered beer with a warm aroma of spices and a sweet rich flavor. Style: Barrel Aged imperial Stout with premium Madagascan vanilla and cinnamon  Vol: 44cl Alc. Vol: 14% (https://beerizer.com/shop/de_moersleutel/barcode-zwart-groen-8719992492923--154306)

Het is een bier van Moersleutel:

We aim to engineer beers that become legendary. We brew big, bold and flavorful beers. Not for the faint of heart. They are made with the most exquisite and finest ingredients, carefully chosen by our Brewers, and sourced from the best Craftspeople. Let it be known: we seek to understand quality and thus never compromise. Therefore, in every sip you take, you taste our brewing passion. So sit back, dare to pour yourself a Moersleutel beer and get ready to - truly - enjoy life! The Moersleutel family  (https://moersleutel.com/)

We’re Pim, Tom, Rob and Max. Four Dutch brothers who founded Moersleutel Craft Brewery back in 2016. At the time, our dad and his friend had their own small brewery and we would brew our own creations when the tanks would be available. Coffee, chocolate, fruit. We experimented with all sorts of flavors. Our first brew for the market actually was a blended imperial stout. Not something for the big crowd, but something we liked to make. To this day we still hold on to this value: We only make beers we like - high in quality and crazy taste. So why beer engineers? We all have a technical background and we use this to our advantage. With our company Zomerdijk Engineering we design and build machines to help small breweries scale up production, including our own.  (https://moersleutel.com/)

THERE ONCE WERE……four brothers from the Netherlands who just finished their technical studies and wanted to prove they were better than their dad at everything. But mostly at brewing beers. Dad dared them to prove their claim and let them have a go at the small brewery he owned.  The guys went on and brewed their first beer which was, as we the Dutch call it ‘slootwater’, or garbage to put it mildly. Thankfully dad and his friends weren’t the worst winners. After they stopped laughing at the four youngsters, they all went back to the brewery and kept brewing beers until they turned out better and better.  After some time practicing at brewing beers and experimenting with all kinds of different flavours and additives, the brothers decided it was time to show the Dutch beer market how to brew real tasty beers. The first concoction they put on shelves of beer shops was an Imperial Stout. But not just a regular imperial stout. No, that would be too easy. It was the very first Barrel Blend  (A blend of the Stouts  ‘Motor Oil’ and ‘Je Moer’) which was well received by beer lovers.  A successful start, but the brothers saw room for improvement. They went back to the original recipe and optimized it to make the beer even tastier. It’s something that they would go on and do for all the beers they released. The first version is usually great, but the second, third or fourth are even better. Which, if you ever tasted one of the first batches, is kind of amazing to pull off. But the guys seem to be able to do it again and again. Now, several years later, Moersleutel beers are perceived as some of the best in the world and even the absolute best in The Netherlands. That’s what makes them not just brewers, but true Beer Engineers. The Dutch word for wrench is 'moersleutel'. People always ask us how to pronounce it. (https://moersleutel.com/about-us)

Many of you probably only know our Barcode Series for its popularity and high ratings. But little of you may know how the Barcode series came to be. Well, at the beginning of our journey we only did labels that didn’t have a barcode. At a certain point, we switched to cans and still didn’t have barcodes. We were actually more focused on brewing the best beer and aging our beers to perfection, than keeping up with the whats and whos of label rules (or beer geek wishes for that matter). After a while, we got more and more requests from people to put barcodes on our labels. So they could check our beers in more easily on Untappd. We, being our non-conformative selves, ignored those requests and kept our eyes on creating big and bold quality beer. Till after a while we just had to give in… But we didn’t give in a little, we gave in big. ‘You want a barcode? We’ll give you a barcode.’ We will make sure you know we gave in to your requests, but you will also never ever be able to forget to check in these beers. Obviously, this was all just a joke we had a good laugh about, and are very proud that every single beer of our Barcode Series has an amazing rating. We are very excited to bring you even more Barcodes in the future. #letsmakeitlegendary (https://moersleutel.com/barcodes)

From a 44cl can into a snifter Cognac, Apple Brandy, Scotch barrel aged Imperial Stout with vanilla and cinnamon... by Jeffo from Netherlands... APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a 2 finger, foamy, frothy, light tan head with okay retention. Black body with high levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades away to a full, creamy cap. Splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving touches of lacing down the glass as it empties. A little over-carbonated for the style, with a overly foamy head. SMELL: Boozy nose with cognac, peated scotch, some cinnamon aromas, vanilla, and some milk chocolate on the nose. Plenty spicy with bold barrel aromas on this one. Nice. TASTE: Cognac, some peated scotch flavors, hints of cinnamon and vanilla up front. Some apple brandy and milk chocolate through the swallow, moving into a bold finish of scotch and brandy barrel, cinnamon spices, some sweet vanilla and milk chocolate flavors, as well as some oak and booze linger on the palate. Flavorful, with plenty going on. PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, a bit foamy, goes down smooth with a bit of a burn and finishes rather sticky on the palate. Some heat and cinnamon spices linger. OVERALL: Great stuff. Aromatic, flavorful, with plenty of layers. The different barrels give it lots of character, with plenty of sweetness and a light touch of peated scotch, and the cinnamon and vanilla additions add another layer of spices to the mix. A good feel also gives it the backbone that it needs. Really enjoyable and well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the style. Glad to see another high quality Barcode in my glass. Cheers!

Moersleutel

Maakt Moersleutel enkel donkere zware bieren?

(https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brouwerij_%27t_IJ)

ecause of its popularity, most craft drinkers know – or think they know – how IPA began. To quote one version of the popular history of the style: "Back in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, England held a large colonial presence in India. The soldiers, sailors and civilians had a huge appetite for beer. Trouble was, the voyage to India was long, and by the time the ship made it there the traditional beers had spoiled. Even when they didn't, the dark porters that were popular at the time weren't quite the ticket in the hot climate of India. George Hodgson of the Bow Brewery in London was the first person to come up with an answer to this problem. He began brewing a lighter style of beer, known as pale ale. Hodgson realized that high alcohol and hop levels would retard spoilage. His process succeeded, and for about 50 years he held a virtual monopoly on the market." Trouble is, almost none of the above is true. Ale and beer were being successfully exported to India – and farther – from at least the beginning of the 18th century, and while there was some spoilage, the beers that were being sent out could easily last a year or more in cask. So nobody needed to invent a new style of beer to survive the journey better. Porter continued to be popular in India through the 19th century, and strong dark beers are still drunk in hot climates, from Sri Lanka to the West Indies. Pale ales were around for at least a century before George Hodgson began brewing. (https://beerconnoisseur.com/articles/truth-about-origins-ipa)

By the 1760’s brewers were being advised that it was “absolutely necessary” to add extra hops to beer if it was being sent to warmer climes, but there is no evidence linking this advice to any specific brewer and certainly no evidence that Hodgson was the person who thought this plan up. Nor was the beer that became IPA particularly strong in alcohol: At around 6.5 percent alcohol by volume, it was, if anything, slightly weaker than average for the time. (https://beerconnoisseur.com/articles/truth-about-origins-ipa)

By the 1760s, brewers were advised to ramp up hopping rates when shipping beer to India and the Caribbean, the antiseptic flowers safeguarding beer—porters and pale ales alike—from spoilage. (Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is an espresso-like throwback to the centuries-old tradition.) The “pale ale prepared for the East and West India climate,” as the beer was sometimes touted, likely grew out of October beer, a generously hopped pale beer that was brewed in the fall, suited for extended aging on country estates. In the 19th century, brewers in Burton-on-Trent, including Bass and Allsopp, codified and popularized the new-breed pale ale. The key ingredient was the local gypsum-laced water, which created a drier, better clarified, and finely bitter beer.... While IPAs made the churning seafaring journey from England to India, the bitter ale was hardly the drink of rank-and-file soldiers. They mostly crushed porters, by then London’s dominant beer style. Civil servants, affluent Europeans and high-ranking officers consumed the pricier hopped pale ale, which never constituted the lion’s share of beer seal.  (https://firstwefeast.com/drink/ipa-myths-debunked-craft-beer/everyone-in-india-drank-ipas)

The first guide to a recipe for pale ale shipped to the East does not appear to have been printed until 1821, when the first American edition of Andrew Ure’s Dictionary of Chemistry said: "It is well known that other things being equal, the liquor keeps in proportion to the quantity of hops. Fresh beer may have from a pound to a pound and a half to a barrel of 32 gallons, June beer two pounds and a half, beer for the month of August three pounds and for a second summer three and an half. For India voyages, four pounds." Whatever Hodgson's recipe was, the Bow brewery's pale ale was certainly the top seller in the East, even after the brewers of Burton upon Trent began exporting to India as well from 1822. In 1829 it was said that “Mr Hodgson’s beer … is by far the best and most sought after in India … In Calcutta Hodgson sold for 50 percent more than Meux, Whitbread, Barclay (three big London porter brewers), or any other brewer.” Ten years later, in 1839, it was described as “Hodgson’s ale, the universal and favourite beverage of our vast Indian territories.” However, this beer was called "pale ale for India," "Pale Ale prepared for the East and West India Climate" and similar circumlocutions, not the familiar name we know today. The first use of the phrase that eventually became shortened to IPA does not seem to occur until an advertisement in The Liverpool Mercury newspaper on January 30, 1835, for Hodgson's "East India Pale Ale." Even after this, many newspaper advertisements continued to talk about "Pale Ale as prepared for India" rather than "India Pale Ale" for another decade or so. (https://beerconnoisseur.com/articles/truth-about-origins-ipa)

Hodgson was the best-known of the early exporters of pale ale to India. But there is no evidence at all that he “invented” a new beer style. Pale ale was already being brewed in England before Hodgson. And the beer Hodgson brewed wasn’t called “India Pale Ale” until more than 40 years after he is first recorded as exporting beer to the Far East. Indeed, there is no evidence that IPA was “invented” at all. It looks more likely the style developed slowly from existing brews as “Pale Ale prepared for the India market”, and was eventually, around 1835, given a new and separate name, East India Pale Ale.... Pale ale was around from at least the 17th century and pale ales were being exported to India from at least the 1780s, if not before. And they weren’t drunk by the troops, either those of the East India Company’s forces or the later British Army forces in India, who much preferred porter, and continued drinking porter in India right through to the end of the 19th century. The pale ales exported by Hodgson, Bass, Allsopp and others were drunk by the middle and upper classes among the Europeans in India, the military officers and the “civil servants”, the civilians who worked for the East India Company, trading, administrating and collecting taxes....Beer did not need to be strong to survive the journey to India, and IPAs were not particularly strong for the time: they were only about 6 per cent to 6.5 per cent abv. Certainly by the 1760s brewers were being told that it was “absolutely necessary” to add extra hops to beer if it was being sent to somewhere warm. But this was not limited to India. And there is absolutely no evidence that George Hodgson of Bow introduced the idea of hopping export beers more strongly than beers for home consumption.... There is no record of any shipwreck being associated with the sale of IPA in the UK. “Pale Ale brewed expressly for the India market” and “suitable for warm climates or home consumption” was on sale in London in 1822, no shipwreck needed. But in fact IPA never took off in Britain until around 1841, after the railway had arrived in Burton upon Trent and made it much easier for the Burton brewers to send their bitter beers to markets around the UK. (https://www.klob.org/articles/2011/08/ipa-myths)

Update October 2015: never say never. It turns out there WAS a shipwreck off the coast of Lancashire, in 1839, after which pale ale which had been on its way to India was sold off in Liverpool – you can read about it here.  But even so, “pale Ale brewed expressly for the India market” and “suitable for warm climates or home consumption” was on sale in London in 1822, no shipwreck needed. And IPA never took off in Britain until around 1841, after the railway had arrived in Burton upon Trent and made it much easier for the Burton brewers to send their bitter beers to markets around the UK. Here is one of the more authoritative sources (being both British and an historian of beer) who sorts things out nicely:

https://zythophile.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/ipa-the-executive-summary/ (https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/ipa-myth.278152/)

We have evidence that ale and beer were being exported, apparently successfully, to India as early as 1711. We know that by the 1760s brewers were being advised that it was “absolutely necessary” to add extra hops to beer if it was being sent to warmer climes. There is no evidence linking this advice, to hop export beer more heavily, to any specific brewer. We know that pale ale, along with porter, brewer unnamed, was being exported to India from at least 1784. We know that pale ale and porter brewed by Hodgson of Bow was being exported to India from at least 1793. We DON’T know whether the Hodgsons were putting extra hops into their pale ale sent to India in the 1790s, as brewers were being advised to do in the 1760s. Somewhere up to “quite probably” they were, I’d say. But still short of “definitely”. They ought to have known that they should do. But there’s no evidence that they did. (https://zythophile.co.uk/2010/03/31/ipa-the-executive-summary/)

We know that a specific hopping rate was being stated for beer for “India voyages” by 1821. We know that as early as January 1822, “Pale Ale brewed expressly for the India market” and “suitable for warm climates or home consumption” was on sale in London (though the brewer was unnamed). We know that a couple of decades later, at least, in 1843, “the Pale Ale prepared for the India market” was described as “carefully fermented, so as to be devoid of all sweetness, or, in other words, to be dry; and it contains double the usual quantity of hops.” We have evidence, 30 years after the event, but collected from an important witness, Samuel Allsopp’s maltster, Job Goodhead, that a Burton brewer was encouraged in 1822 to take on Hodgson in the Indian market. We know from multiple references that, despite the increased rivalry from Burton brewers, Hodgson’s beer was hugely popular in the east, being described in 1829 as “by far the best and most sought after in India”. We know that no “pale ale as prepared for the Indian market” seems to have actually been called India Pale Ale (specifically “East India Pale Ale”) until 1835 1829. We know that Hodgson’s, at least, used East Kent hops in its “Pale India Ale”, and we are entitled to guess that these were East Kent Goldings. We also know that Hodgson’s dry-hopped its pale ale. We know that the Hodgsons evidently became greedy, and lost the Indian market to others, including Bass and Allsopp from Burton and Ind & Smith from Romford, just east of London (later Ind Coope). We know that from 1841 onwards East India Pale Ale became increasingly popular in the British market. We know that in 1869 William Molyneaux claimed that “The origin of India ale is by common consent accredited to a London brewer named Hodgson … The brewery where pale ale was first brewed, according to popular opinion, was the Old Bow Brewery.” But Molyneaux offered no evidence to back this up, and we know the Bow brewery wasn’t the first place to brew pale ale per se. (https://zythophile.co.uk/2010/03/31/ipa-the-executive-summary/)

On a balmy January day in 1822, the Calcutta Gazette announced the unloading of "Hodgson's warranted prime picked ale of the genuine October brewing. Fully equal, if not superior, to any ever before received in the settlement." The army had been waiting for this — pale and bright and strong, those Kentish hops a taste of home (not to mention a scurvy-busting boost of antibiotics). The praise turned Hodgson's sons Mark and Frederick, who took over the brewery from their father soon after, ruthless. In the years to come, if they heard that another brewer was preparing a shipment, they'd flood the market to drive down prices and scare off the competition. They tightened their credit limits and hiked up their prices, eventually dumping the EIC altogether and shipping beer to India themselves. The suits downriver were not amused. By the late 1820s, EIC director Campbell Marjoribanks, in particular, had had enough. He stormed into Bow's rival Allsopp with a bottle of Hodgson's October beer and asked for a replica. What Maris Otter is to British beer, Cascade hops are to American. Thanks to high-profile flagships like Sierra Nevada's Pale and Anchor Brewing's Liberty, American pales are defined by the spritzy grapefruit blossom nose of Cascade hops. And John Segal grew them first. As influential as Cascades are, they're relatively new. Like Maris Otter, their roots go back to the late '60s. The American hops industry had never fully recovered since the one-two of Prohibition and a plague of the hop-withering parasite downy mildew in the late 1920s wiped out the crop and many of its buyers. Farmers grew almost entirely Clusters, a workhorse bittering hop, leaving the specialty strains to Europe: Coors Light's image may have been all-American, but its spicy-sweet nose was decidedly Teutonic, from aromatic Czech and German strains like Hallertau Mittelfruh. ... But when a fungus-spread epidemic of vertcillium wilt in the 1950s cut the Mittelfruh harvest and inflated prices, American brewers — already wary of the Cluster monoculture's susceptibility to a similar outbreak — started pushing for homegrown diversity. Coors talked to the Department of Agriculture, who talked to some breeders, who talked to John Segal, who planted a few samples of a hybrid strain he called “USDA56013” in 1968. Four years of test brewing (and a name change) later, and Coors bought Segal Ranch's first commercially available crop of Cascades, paying a dollar a pound at a time when most growers were lucky to get half that. Two years later, a fledgling San Francisco start-up called Anchor bought some for a new beer they were making, Liberty Ale. Liberty shocked American palates, the Cascade's citrus bite too aggressive for most. But growers saw its quality, and corresponding price, and Cascades soon swept the valley. Today, Liberty is a craft beer common denominator, and Cascades are an icon. (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-india-pale-ale-got-its-name-180954891/)

(https://www.brouwerijhetij.nl/i-p-a-brouwerij-t-ij/)

(https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brouwerij_%27t_IJ)

Over ironie gesproken.

Ironie veroorzaakt nogal eens misverstanden in geschreven teksten.

Verwant met dit begrip is bear on the beach. (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramatische_ironie)

Many people struggle with irony in their writing, despite the media fable that everyone born after 1965 lives a life so deeply entrenched in irony that we can’t handle a direct assertion.(https://copyblogger.com/did-alanis-morissette-get-irony-right/)

When it comes to “not getting” irony, there’s one person who comes immediately to mind for many — Alanis Morissette. More than two decades later, her hit song “Ironic” from the 1995 album Jagged Little Pill is still the punch line of scores of irony-related jokes. If you’re not familiar, Morissette’s song describes various life situations followed by the two questions “Isn’t it ironic?” and “Don’t you think?” (https://copyblogger.com/did-alanis-morissette-get-irony-right/)

The perceived problem with the song is that most, if not all, of the given examples do not constitute either situational or literary irony.

For example:

“A traffic jam when you’re already late

A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break

It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife

It’s meeting the man of my dreams

And then meeting his beautiful wife

And isn’t it ironic … don’t you think?”

Well, no. Those are unfortunate situations, but they are not typically what one would define as ironic. Which leads critics to claim that Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” isn’t actually ironic.(https://copyblogger.com/did-alanis-morissette-get-irony-right/)

“Alanis may not be so dumb after all. If you discount the argument that some of her examples qualify as ‘cosmic irony’ (which I think is rather weak), the song ‘Ironic’ is devoid of irony in any of the illustrations she offers. “That, in and of itself, is ironic, and justifies the entire song from an artistic standpoint. Ms. Morissette may have been playing a wonderfully perverse joke on all of us on another level.” I never heard back from the reader, so I’m guessing he didn’t like my theory. I decided to do a little digging to see if Morissette had ever validated that interpretation. Here’s an Alanis quote about “Ironic”: “For me the sweetest moment came in New York when a woman came up to me in a record store and said, ‘So all those things in ‘Ironic’ aren’t ironic.’ And then she said, ‘And that’s the irony.’ I said, ‘Yup.’” One could certainly argue that Morissette simply recognized a saving grace and took it. Others might argue that the song does contain at least one or two examples of irony, which would invalidate the explanation. Regardless, there’s a point for writers beyond the notion that Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” isn’t ironic. The point is this … You may be absolutely brilliant, but if only really smart people and mystery lovers can figure out what you’re actually talking about, you’re a failure from a marketing standpoint. This isn’t a problem for pop stars, but it’s something to think about when you approach your own blogging and copywriting. Isn’t it ironic that a genius communicator is someone who can express things as simply and clearly as possible? Dontcha think? (https://copyblogger.com/did-alanis-morissette-get-irony-right/)

DDH IPA To Øl

Developmental Dislocation (Dysplasia) of the Hip (DDH) The hip is a "ball-and-socket" joint. In a normal hip, the ball at the upper end of the thighbone (femur) fits firmly into the socket, which is part of the large pelvis bone. In babies and children with developmental dysplasia (dislocation) of the hip (DDH), the hip joint has not formed normally. The ball is loose in the socket and may be easy to dislocate. Although DDH is most often present at birth, it may also develop during a child's first year of life. Recent research shows that babies whose legs are swaddled tightly with the hips and knees straight are at a notably higher risk for developing DDH after birth. As swaddling becomes increasingly popular, it is important for parents to learn how to swaddle their infants safely, and to understand that when done improperly, swaddling may lead to problems like DDH. (https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/diseases--conditions/developmental-dislocation-dysplasia-of-the-hip-ddh)

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in Children What is developmental dysplasia of the hip in children?Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a health problem of the hip joint. It’s when the joint hasn’t formed normally, so it doesn’t work as it should. DDH is present at birth. It is more common in girls than boys. In a normal hip joint, the top (head) of the thighbone (femur) fits snugly into the hip socket. In a child with DDH, the hip socket is shallow. As a result, the head of the femur may slip in and out. It may dislocate. This means it moves partly or completely out of the hip socket. (https://www.stanfordchildrens.org/en/topic/default?id=developmental-dysplasia-of-the-hip-ddh-90-P02755)

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the prevalent musculoskeletal conditions in young adults and is a leading cause of hip osteoarthrosis in this age group. The optimum age for surgical intervention when needed is not well established in the literature and the lack of management guidelines and standard practice of DDH leads to different practices worldwide. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28659058/)

Since 1988 DDH has served clients worldwide in support of their contract manufacturing requirements. (http://www.ddhent.com/)

(https://www.vandestreekbier.nl/ddh-galaxy/)

What Is DDH Beer?
A Complete Guide on Double Dry Hopped (DDH) BeerIf you have spent any time recently in a brewery taproom or any number of beer destinations throughout the country, you may have noticed three little letters next to more and more offerings: DDH.
Those three letters stand for “Double Dry Hopped” and have become affixed to styles across the board, but most notable is the domination of DDH IPAs increasingly being poured. These days breweries are building their brands on the uber-hype that comes along with nearly anything they release labeled as Double Dry Hopped. Some breweries have built their business on eager lines of customers extending around the building filled with beer lovers clamoring for a one-off release that received the briefest mention on social media with that attractive term DDH. Sometimes, these fans willingly hand over $20 to $30 for a single four-pack! With all of this demand, and the constant brewery one-upmanship taking place throughout the beer industry, the question arises: is Double Dry Hopped an organic marketing term or a truly new dominant style?
A decade ago, the term DDH was unheard of, and any beer using the specific methods employed in DDH beers was generally just called “Dry Hopped.” Typically, hops are added to the brew cycle at specific times during the boil to extract desired levels of bitterness with the goal to balance the sweetness of the malt. In brewing math, keep adding more malts and more hops until you get to the desired IBU levels to match the style guide you’re using or the preferred tastes you’re planning to cater to. If a brewer wants to go bigger and create a Double or Triple IPA, they double or triple their malt and hops from the base recipe. Dry hopping, on the other hand, is its own technique altogether, but that doesn’t mean sometimes they can’t go hand-in-hand! Think of a Dry Hopped Double IPA such as Pliny the Elder.
On the technical side, hops added to the wort at the end of the boil will lead to fewer alpha acids being converted to iso-alpha acids, and therefore the beer will retain more aromatics lending to the piney, citrusy, herbal or grassy notes that so many IPA lovers gravitate towards. By contrast, dry hopping is the process of adding dried hop pellets to a brew after cashing the wort or during secondary fermentation. By adding the hops after the boil, the volatile oils contained are not extracted and therefore none of the bitterness, but rather only aromatics are passed along to the finished product. This technique has become increasingly popular across nearly all styles including lagers and sours. However, none have become nearly as sought after as the Hazy or Juicy IPA.(https://beerconnoisseur.com/articles/ddh-beer)

WTF is DDH? It Depends on Whom You Ask.... “DDH” is more complicated than it looks. The acronym, which stands for “double dry-hopped,” is increasingly adopted by trend-driven (and trend-setting) brewers putting out hoppy, aromatic IPAs and DIPAs. In fact, many New England IPAs, a particularly sticky category, are sold in 16-ounce cans with the letters “DDH” on them.
Double dry-hopping has not been cumulatively defined, though, so for some, the term raises more questions than answers. Is it just a marketing buzzword? Has the acronym evolved into something greater than the sum of its parts? We asked the brewers on all sides of the conversation to make sense of the phenomenon.... A dry-hopped beer is simple enough to define — hops are added to the beer-in-process post-boil, or on the “cold side,” when the liquid is in its primary or secondary fermentation phase. This allows the hops to impart all their wonderful aromas without leaving behind the bitterness you get when you boil them.... “Doubling” that process can mean one of two things.
“It essentially means dry hopping twice, or [hopping with] twice as much hops,” says Scott Ungermann, brewmaster at Anchor Brewing in San Francisco, the brewery that boasts being the first to regularly employ the dry-hopping method in America, circa the mid-1970s. But, he adds, “There are so many different methods of what people are using now — HopRocket, hopback, our Taco Cat — new methods of dry hopping just keep coming.”
Augie Carton, founder of Carton Brewing in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, believes that the term “double dry-hopped” means something totally different from its acronym. Carton says “DDH” has transcended its literal definition, taking on a meaning — and beer style — all its own.
“DDH seems to exist on a type [of beer], the NEIPA,” Carton says. “What that means is hop haze and protein haze with a very serious amount of late-addition hopping. DDH became shorthand for a very large amount of late-addition hops; I just think it’s silly because the first ‘D’ means ‘double,’ and if you don’t have anything to begin with, you can’t double it. If you don’t have a one, you can’t make it two.”
Carton raises a compelling point. Let’s say a brewery has produced an IPA — we’ll call it a VinePair IPA — that is dry-hopped one time. A “double” version of our VinePair IPA could either entail dry-hopping it an additional time, or using twice as many hops the first time around. Either way, voila: DDH VinePair IPA.
If there isn’t a singularly dry-hopped VinePair IPA, though, who is to say what constitutes a doubly dry-hopped VinePair IPA? In many instances, Carton says, the label “DDH” comes to mean “a lot of hops,” as opposed to a specific amount or process.
It’s “trying to simplify something that isn’t simple,” Carton says. For example, he argues, a dry-hopped lager might use one pound of hops per barrel. A dry-hopped IPA might have three pounds of hops per barrel; and a DDH DIPA (double dry-hopped double IPA) could have six pounds of hops per barrel or more. “[Another brewer] recently told me they did nine pounds of hops per barrel,” Carton says. “That’s a lot of hops.”
In short, there is not a specified amount, and each brewery double dry-hops differently. “It’s really what you want that recipe to be,” Carton says. (https://vinepair.com/articles/ddh-ipa-beer-explainer/)

At Sixpoint Brewery, based in Brooklyn, chief product officer Eric Bachli says double dry-hopping “is really doubling the quantity of hops per barrel. A double dry-hopped version can mean adding double the hops at the same time you would with a single hopped beer, or some [brewers] split it up, doing a first charge that’s the same [amount of hops] as the base recipe, and adding a second charge later on.”
Bachli gives the example of a beer he recently developed at Sixpoint, DDH Resin. “For DDH Resin, we add a big charge at one point in fermentation,” he says, “and a second load a few days after.”
At Carton Brewing, instead of using the term double dry-hopped or its acronym, Carton prefers simply describing the beer in its name. “I’m making a beer right now other people would call DDH DIPA, [and I’m calling it] Hoppy Lact-Oat Pale Ale,” Carton says. (The beer is brewed using lactose and oats, two key ingredients in many DDH DIPAs.) “All of my beers have always had two dry-hoppings. I don’t find use in that term. If I want to say it’s hoppy, I just write the word ‘hoppy’ on it. Carton is all about conversation, and I think a shorthand term takes that aspect away.”
Anchor Brewing, despite being an early American dry-hopping player, will release its first double dry-hopped beer, Brewers Pale Ale, this year. “Because we’re dropping the hops out of the Taco Cat and reintroducing more hops, we are referring to it as an aromatically complex, double dry-hopped pale ale,” Ungermann says. “It’s the first time we’ve referred to a beer as such,” he adds.... “If you get a DDH beer and it’s not an aromatic hop bomb, then you’ve been lied to,” Carton says. “I would never call BS on JC [Tetreault, co-founder] at Trillium or Sam [Richardson, co-founder] at Other Half. When they say DDH, their beers are that.”
Carton doesn’t see DDH as trickery — “I’m not that cynical,” he says — but he does think it is an inefficient label. “The lack of anything ‘doubled’ [in a beer labeled DDH] isn’t a fallacy, it’s just poor English. It’s marketers getting lazy and using shorthand they know people are excited by.”... “Just stop calling these beers IPA and call them DDH,” Carton says. “What people call the NEIPA is so far removed from what an IPA is. Instead of making DDH a sub-genre of IPA, just call it a DDH. There’s no ‘double’ of anything because nobody has the original coefficient.” Carton believes you simply “can’t double something you haven’t singled. At least, that’s what I think the solution is.”
Mathematics are straightforward. Beer, not so much.

Ik heb geen DDH IPA van Basqueland , Vinepair of Vandestreek ik heb een DDH IPA Mono Mosaic van To Øl!

To Øl
To Øl is a young Danish craft beer brewery founded in 2010. When To Øl was founded, we were sick of hundred years old breweries claiming territory only due to old age – instead we wanted to give beer some youth. At To Øl we do contemporary beers. We brew a wide range of potent, provocative, fresh and floral beers; hoppy, balanced and complex beers both light, dark, strong and simple. We brew the beers we want to drink ourselves and work to do the best beers in the world. We never compromise on taste and balance and keep pushing the boundaries of great beer-crafting. Back in 2005 the founders of To Øl, Tore Gynther and Tobias Emil Jensen, were young guns studying at a direct democracy based high school in Nørrebro, Copenhagen – Det Fri Gymnasium. They pirated the school kitchen facilities during closing hours and began turning it into a brewing lab. Malts were mashed, hop leaves boiled, yeast fermented and bubbled within lab flasks. In short: the hunt for potent quality beers had begun. To Øl released the first commercial beer in 2010 and the To Øl brewery was founded. To Øl entered Ratebeer’s list of Top 100 best breweries in the world in 2012 – and in 2014 To Øl was awarded the world’s 9th best brewery. Many crazy things have happened since that first release, but even high-school sweethearts drift apart, and in the beginning of 2017 Tobias Emil Jensen stepped out of To Øl to work on other projects.
....
Starting out as a home brewing project back in 2005, To Øl was permanently established in 2010 working as a gypsy brewery lending in on other breweries spare capacity for the following decade. In 2019 we took over a former food factory in the Western part of Zealand, Denmark, where we’re setting up a full-blown specially designed brewery and craft beverage hub. To Øl City is the name of the place. ... The facility is a 150.000 m2 ground with 26.600 m2 buildings on it. With To Øl City we are bringing all of our beer production home to Denmark ending a long and fun era as gypsy brewers. We will still be travelling and brewing abroad, but now we have a big and beautiful place to invite all of our friends and brewers over for collabs, fun and games too. To Øl City is also a craft beverage hub. Amazing craft beverage producers, who were previously limited by space and resources, can make a home in To Øl City and work with us to raise the bar in our industries exponentially higher. It is becoming a collective of the most talented craft beverage producers in Denmark, and we’re already hosting cider producers. kombucha brewers and rum distillers.

Stereo Mono Mosaic [DDH Single Hop India Pale Ale]
Mosaic - the mother of juicy hops. Packed with both tropical, citrusy, and slight piney notes, this hop truly lives up to its name and provides a mosaic of aromas.
The goal for our Stereo Mono series is to let the hops take the center stage, why the base for this beer is Pale Malts, Wheat Malt, Chit Malt, Flaked Oats and just a hint of Melanoidin to create as clean a canvas for the hop aroma as possible, while still having a slight backbone to balance out the bitterness from the hops and present to you a juicy fresh IPA packed with notes of Peach, Mango, Blueberries, and citrus. (https://toolbeer.dk/products/stereo-mono-mosaic-1)

Licht bitter.

(https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweden)

Abba, Ace of Base, dr. Alban, Roxette, Europe, The Cardigans, Loreen, Eric Prydz, Avicii, Otto Knows, Mike Perry en Swedish House Mafia.

Eriksberg (24×0,33l blik) Alc. 5,3% (https://www.ciderstore.nl/product/eriksberg/)

Svensk, Mariestadts Bryggeri Aktiebolag.

Mariestads Bryggeri Aktiebolag of Grängesberg, Dalarna County, Sweden... The Fate of the Brewery building is unknown (https://www.taverntrove.com/mariestads-bryggeri-aktiebolag-of-gr-ngesberg-dalarna-county-sweden-br-7833.html)

Evil_Pidde from Sweden... A: This beer pours dark brown with hints of red. The large light brown head is rather compact and thick. Dissipates at a medium pace, leaving some lacings.
S: Roasted sweet malt, with bitter hops and some fruityness - cherries.
T: Roasted sweet malt. Some dark dried fruits. Bitter hops in the back. Kind of chocolaty.
M: Aftertaste lasts for quite some time and holds a nice balanced bitterness. Body is medium to full and carbonation is medium and smooth.
D: This is probably the best beer I've had with the label "Mariestad". As a x-masbeer combined with the swedish x-mas smorgasbord highly recommended.

Mariestads Tradition
Spendrups Bryggeri AB... Style:Lager - European PaleABV:3.5%... WoodBrew from Ohio... The beer is typical of Euro style beers. Poured golden clear with good carbontation that provided decent head...both howver faded with time. The smell and taste was common to others grain, barley, and hops to provide a good balanced taste. The mouthfeel is good, little on the lighter side. The lower ABV helps to make this a session beer. Overall a decent brew.

Mariestads Old Ox
Spendrups Bryggeri AB... Style:Lager - European Strong
Ranked #48ABV:6.9% ...  Wer34truh from Minnesota .... I find Euro Strong Lager to be a disgusting beer style, and I'm not quite sure why I'm even bothering. With that said, and part of it is due to this rather low ABV for the style, but this is a quite drinkable beer. My plaudits end there. This is merely a drinkable beer as a result of it's light mouthfeel and the sweetness which counteracts the alcohol.
Dec 08, 2016 .... Alex-Alkis from Sweden... A little more pressure and taste in this beer compared to the normal Mariestads Export, probably because of the alcohol content. The beer has a nice appearance and aroma in addition I have drunk tastier beers than this, but still pretty good for a pretty normal Swedish pilsner.
Alc. 6,9 (https://www.ciderstore.nl/product/mariestads-old-ox/)
