So what's the deal with Beer Advocate? Does anyone still even use them? Are they even around and/or relevant in a year? For being the 'go-to resource for beer', their relevancy in today's beer culture is pretty pathetic. In my area, we have a really good brewery, Sapwood Cellars, who recently celebrated their first anniversary. On Untappd they have 37,000+ total check ins to their beers. On Beer Advocate? 115 total. I know 10 years ago they were the big (and only) thing in town, and I had personally reviewed thousands of beers on their site. Now it's just so sad to see 'hype' beers have under 10 reviews on their site (if they are even added at all!). Untappd has single handedly killed them as BA refused to admit that people needed or wanted a mobile quick way to review beers. I find it comical that BA kept teasing this awesome and amazing new app earlier this year that was going to be an 'Untappd Killer', yet any questions about it on the forums are curiously deleted right away by the Alstrom Bros. and they refuse to give any sort of update on it. On top of this, their festivals are shells of their former selves, with raising ticket prices and worse attendees. You had a good run BA, but you're pretty irrelevant to the current beer enthusiant. https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/eq23bv/so_whats_the_deal_with_beer_advocate_does_anyone/?rdt=38494

Back when I got into craft beer (2011) Beer Advocate was the place for craft beer drinkers online. It was awesome, it was a site that opened my eyes to beers that I never would have known existed. Pliny, The Abyss, West 12, etc. But now everyone seems to use Untappd and almost no one I talk to in person knows that Beer Advocate exists. I'm sure it gets plenty of traffic but sadly I think its street cred is gone. That being said, what are your thoughts? Do you use it? Is it a relic of the past?   https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

Honestly the site is doing pretty well now. Back when the bros were always causing drama because of their egos, the site had a big exodus which created TalkBeer, then that forum slowly faded then sold and had another exodus to DDT. But that has a small userbase by comparison. RateBeer hasn't been what it was since its heydey, which was some time ago. And is also owned by AB now. BeerAdvocate is still fairly active, and has relaxed many of their prior strict rules. The bros are no longer the dictator style owners as BeerAdvocate sold to the parent company of Untappd. So they have bosses now and can't just go off on people. It is a pretty good community now honestly.  https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

I still go to BA for reviews, but I low-key hate them for not having a mobile app while at the same time having a super shitty mobile-web experience.   https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

Beer Advocate 3.68 "Bright and clean lager with a mild hickory nose. Well balanced throughout with a fair amount of yeast particulate. Reminds me of a perfect beer to have on a summer evening watching the fireworks with my uncle Frank and his dalmatian "Rorschach". As the beer hits my palate and the moon waxes..." Untappd 0.25 "I no like Lager. Why they not make IPA?" https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

Beer Advocate is better for reading detailed reactions that are helpful in determining if I would like a certain beer or not. But score-wise Untapped tends to be a lot closer to meeting expectations when I finally try that beer. Beer Advocate scores are way inflated for a ton of stuff IMO.  https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

BA died because they refused to adapt to the modern internet. It’s so much more convenient to quickly go on Untappd and check beers in especially with its integration with venue’s tap lists. Do you realize how hard it is to upload a picture to BA? You have to go through a third party hoster and upload there and then hope the link works and embeds when you paste it in. An app and picture integration would’ve gone a long way towards them keeping relevance. Also Todd is a fucking dickhead who kills any convo that he doesn’t like and throws out bans any time his feelings get hurt. Trading there has died too as people migrated to other platforms (Facebook groups). The beer inventory on BA is woefully out of date  https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

Seems like newer craft beer drinkers gravitate towards Untappd whereas the veterans gravitate towards Beer Advocate. I think both have their purpose. I enjoy the Beer Advocate forums because of the people and the knowledge that was and can be gained there.  https://www.reddit.com/r/CraftBeer/comments/18gtwz6/how_is_beer_advocate_viewed_today/

As another poster noted, I think a lot of the issue with BA is "The Brothers" who seemed to go out of their way to alienate their community/customers. I have yet to come across anyone who's had a positive interaction with them, and with the magazine going out of print BA is a shadow of it's former self.  https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/eq23bv/so_whats_the_deal_with_beer_advocate_does_anyone/?rdt=38494

I use BeerAdvocate regularly as a resource to look up information about specific beers, such as description, ABV, etc. In my experience with Untappd's website, I rarely am able to find the info I'm looking for. Disclaimer: I do not use any beer apps.  https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/eq23bv/so_whats_the_deal_with_beer_advocate_does_anyone/?rdt=38494

I like BA because the reviews are often longer and more nuanced than Untappd. Way more info on a beer and whether I'm going to like it; Untappd is more handy for looking up what local bars have and a quick review if I'm in a beer store. But BA is superior if I really want to do some research.

I'm also glad they're not churning out reviews of hype releases or the 108th version of a fermented OJ hazy. Untappd is fine if you like or care about those, because those are less about the beer and more about social media hype.  https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/eq23bv/so_whats_the_deal_with_beer_advocate_does_anyone/?rdt=38494

What ever happened to all that money the Alstrom's begged for to make their BA app years ago? All those beer vacations to Belgium?... Beer vacations. That's what happens each time. They ask for money for new servers or whatever then they take a nice trip instead while the site is still shit. People are idiots for contributing each time. Then again most have been members for only a short time and don't know that they're donating to empty promises.... This is quite upsetting. I'm unaware that they took money for an app that's still non-existent but clearly they could have used the money for better things! I've gone to two BA sponsored beer fests (ACBF and Belgian Beer Fest) this year and I thought they were both well organized. Saw the bros. at the BBF but I didn't interact with them; though I feel the community gives them a "holier than thou" kind of aura. I feel like I disassociate myself with the subcultures I should fall into because of people with attitudes like this. Whenever I go to an event or a beer bar and try to engage some people in conversation about beer, it ultimately turns into the other person talking about what beers they've had that they think is better than the ones I've had. I'm all for talking about beer but when you try to make me feel inferior for not having a bunch of one-offs then fuck off. (This is something I've noticed with people in and around my age group, 24, but older beer fans have been great company!) This kind of childish attitude is not progressive for craft beer.  https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/12c2sd/todd_alstrom_from_ba_contiunes_being_a_douchebag/

Years ago I was very active on that site (one of their first magazine issues had an advertisement listing me as the 2nd most active poster). Reviewed well over 100 places and thousands of beers. Added dozens of beers and new beer places and was very active in the forums. Also contributed to the magazine. I got into it with Todd all the time but generally we worked things out even when I ... https://www.reddit.com/r/beer/comments/12c2sd/todd_alstrom_from_ba_contiunes_being_a_douchebag/

Beer Birthday: Todd Alström January 10, 2024 By Jay Brooks ba-square Today is the 55th birthday of Todd Alström, co-founder of Beer Advocate. With his brother Jason, Todd has created one of the killer apps of the beer world online and the only monthly beer magazine. Though we only run into one another from time to time, we always have a good time. We also shared a week in Bavaria on a press junket in 2007, and had a terrific fry crawl in Boston a number of years ago, before he relocated to Denver, and more recently to Helsinki, Finland. Join me in wishing Todd a very happy birthday. https://brookstonbeerbulletin.com/beer-birthday-todd-alstrom/

BeerAdvocate is an online beer rating site which also rates bars and beer stores.[11] It was founded in 1996,[12] by brothers Todd and Jason Alström,[13] and is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and Denver, Colorado, United States.[14] As of November 2013, BeerAdvocate's database contained about 3,783,570 ratings of about 100,976 beers.[15][16] As of February 2020, BeerAdvocate is owned by Next Glass, which is also the parent company of Untappd.[17] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_rating

RateBeer was founded in May 2000 by Bill Buchanan[18] as a forum for beer drinkers to exchange information and share opinions of beer. In June 2000, the Canadian beer writer Josh Oakes[19] joined RateBeer and eventually became editor-in-chief. In June 2001, the web-site consultant Joe Tucker joined, eventually assuming full ownership of RateBeer.[20] In August 2006, RateBeer's annual press-release of the highest rated beers on the site caused concern when various world media reported that supplies of Westvleteren 12 were sold out due to being listed as the "Best beer in the world" on the site.[21][22][23] RateBeer has over 4.5 million ratings (as of early 2013)[24] of more than 470,000 beers, from over 26,000 breweries.[25] In June 2017, it was revealed that Anheuser-Busch InBev had acquired a minority stake in RateBeer via the incubator ZX Ventures. This purchase led to concerns that the company had a conflict of interest, citing that the site could present bias towards Anheuser-Busch InBev brands, that there was a lack of transparency over the role of the company's investment, and that it could potentially gain access to customer data. Several breweries attempted to demand that their listings be removed from the website. Executive director Joe Tucker stated that "Nothing about this investment changes who we are and what we provide. We will just be able to give our community of beer drinkers an even better experience".[26] As of February 2019, RateBeer is fully owned by ZX Ventures, the global growth and innovation arm of AB InBev.[27] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_rating

Untappd is a geosocial networking service and mobile phone application founded by Greg Avola and Tim Mather that allows its users to check in as they drink beers, and share these check-ins and their locations with their friends.[5] It incorporates aspects of gamification.[6] Untappd provides a platform for users to rate the beer they are consuming, earn badges, share pictures of their beers, review tap lists from nearby venues, see what beers their friends are drinking, comment on checked-in beers, and ask the app to suggest similar beverages.[7][8] In 2016, an updated version of the application allowed users to find a beer by scanning its barcode[9] Untappd uses Foursquare for its location services.[10] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untappd

Badges As a user checks in different beers, they earn badges. These badges consist of local badges, beer badges, venue badges, and special badges. Local badges are earned from checking in at specific locations participating in an Untappd for Business promotion. Beer badges are earned based upon how many unique beers a user has checked in, what country or region the beer is produced, what style the beer is, or various actions by the user, such as checking in the same beer multiple times in a row. Venue badges are earned for checking in at different locations like breweries, restaurants, or festivals. Special badges are earned from checking in a specific beer as part of a promotion or checking in on a specific holiday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untappd

History Untappd started in 2010 at Father's Office in Santa Monica, California. On January 17, 2014 it was announced that Untappd had passed the 1 million user mark[11] and by April 2016, they had 3.2 million users.[12] On January 15, 2016, Untappd announced that it would become a subsidiary of Next Glass, a beer and wine rating and suggesting application.[13][14] Both companies indicated their applications will remain independent, but will benefit from increased data integrations.[15] It was included in the "Top 50 Apps of the Year" of 2016 by Time.[16] At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic on March 25, 2020, the Untappd at Home campaign was launched, so users could check in beers from a global home location.[17] As of September 4, 2020 Untappd, reported 820,000 unique users checked-in at least once from almost 180 different countries.[18] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untappd

BeerAdvocate Discontinues Print Magazine Industry News Apr 2  Written By Today, BeerAdvocate founders Jason and Todd Alstrom announced to subscribers the discontinuation of their print magazine which was founded in 2007. It's not a huge surprise since last year the beer ratings and review website had trouble fulfilling subscriptions and shifted from a 72-page monthly print edition to a 112-page quarterly. This follows the news that both Northwest Brewing News and Oregon Beer Growler Magazine have also both called it quits. BeerAdvocate also just recently announced their new mobile app Beers by BeerAdvocate that attempts to bring back some of the users who have went to Untappd or even RateBeer. "It's no secret that the media world has experienced rapid change over the last few years. The truth is the media landscape has long been defined by change, including the niche occupied by beer periodicals like our own BeerAdvocate magazine. And change, while painful at times, can often be a positive." wrote the brothers Alstrom in an email today. The upcoming April release of the 134th issue will be the last of the magazine and wont actually be in print, but released as a pdf to subscribers. https://newschoolbeer.com/nsb/2019/04/beeradvocate-discontinues-print-magazine.html
